Outside India, this 3G-enabled iPhone model is available for as little as Rs 8,000, but this is a bundled offer which mandates that subscribers stick with the operator for 24 months after buying the phone.

For instance, in the US, Apple is pricing the new iPhone at $199 for the 8GB version and $299 for the 16 GB version, which is nearly 50% cheaper than the earlier version. In the UK, Apple has said that the 8GB handset will cost £99 ($194), but subscribers will need a monthly tariff of £30 or £35 to avail of this offer. ET has learnt that Bharti and Vodafone will not adopt this bundling model in India.

Bharti and Vodafone had opened up bookings for the latest version of the iPhone about two months ago. Both telcos did not reveal as to how many subscribers have signed up for this handset so far. The new iPhone, combines all the revolutionary features of the earlier version with 3G networking, which is twice as fast as the first-generation iPhone.

The new iPhone features built-in GPS for expanded location-based mobile services and iPhone 2.0 software, which supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and hundreds of third-party applications.

The catch is that 3G services are not likely to be available in India until mid ’09. 3G services involves high-end offerings on the mobile such as ultra-fast internet, downloads of movies, music and video clips and video conferencing among others.

“iPhone has been an iconic technological revelation of this year,” Bharti Airtel’s president for mobile services Sanjay Kapoor said in a statement.

The move to partner Airtel and Vodafone marks a major shift in Apple’s global strategy of ‘one country-one operator’. But with India emerging as the fastest-growing cellular market, analysts said Apple would want to tie up with all leading operators to maximise growth and revenues. Airtel and Vodafone have a subscriber base of over 220 million.

The earlier version of the iPhone has been available in the grey market in India for about a year now. Industry estimates peg the number of such devices in India at a whopping 5-6 lakh. Dealers in Mumbai and Delhi started selling it soon after it was launched in the US last year.
http://iphoneindianews.blogspot.com/atom.xml

Iphone 3G in India costs more than $199 (Rs 8000)

Vodafone and Airtel started pre-registering customers for the iPhone 3G last week, and ever since, every fan, offices, forums and blogs have been abuzz with discussions on what Apple’s much-awaited product iphone 3G how much will be priced at. Many think it will be just a shade over Rs 8,000 comparing price in the US and other Weston country’s, which is $199. Now, that’s a fantastic price for the 8GB product, and will certainly have every competitor worried about and 16GB $299.

The current mobile makers like Sony Ericson, Samsung, black berry, HTC touch, Motorola, LG, Nokia, PALM, smart phones are priced at around Rs 24,000, and few new models are expected to come at over Rs 35,000.

But we think the iPhone, expected to hit the Indian market in September, will be priced substantially higher than Rs 8,000. The $199 price is a hugely subsidised one, subsidised by the US operator AT&T. Market researcher iSuppli has just estimated that mobile phone service providers are subsidising each handset to the extent of $300.

Some other analysts think the subsidy is higher at $350 per unit. In other words, the actual price that AT&T pays to Apple for each iPhone unit is $499, going by the iSuppli estimate. Vodafone and Airtel are unwilling to talk about the price they will offer the iPhone at.

but Bharti Airtel CEO Manoj Kohli told TOI there is no question of subsidising the handset in India. “US operators are able to subsidise handsets because they can make up for that with their call charges. They charge rates like 25 cents a minute. In India, the charge is 1.5 to 2 cents a minute,” Kohli said.

In the absence of a subsidy then, the handset could be priced at $499 or a little over Rs 21,000 (governmental levies on mobile phones in India are marginal). Unless Apple chooses to offer the iPhone at lower margins to countries like India. iSuppli estimates it costs Apple just $173 to produce the latest version (excluding the cost of software development, shipping, distribution, packaging and accessories included with each iPhone). So it enjoys a huge margin on the product.

We’ll have to see if Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs is willing to sacrifice some of that. But any which way, even at a price of Rs 21,000, the iPhone looks certain to sizzle the handset market.

http://iphoneindianews.blogspot.com/atom.xml

Apple IPHONE 3G is ready to book on AIRTEL India

Today airtel launched pre registration for Apple iphone 3G in india.
